Importance of Contact Lens Fittings

Before making the transition from glasses to contacts, it’s essential you get a contact lens exam and fitting. This is on top of a comprehensive eye exam that tests your eye health and visual clarity.

During a contact lens exam, our eye doctor will measure the curvature of the cornea of your eyes to determine the size, shape, and type of contact lens best suited to your needs. We’ll also measure the pupil and iris of your eyes to get an accurate contact lens fitting. Lastly, we’ll evaluate the tear film of your eyes to see if you have problems with dry eye, as this will affect the type of contacts you can use. These tests will enable our eye doctor to write you an accurate prescription for wearing contacts safely to avoid problems with your eyes.

Once you’ve completed these tests and chosen your contacts, we’ll fit you with a trial pair to see how they work for you. You’ll be asked to wear these contacts for a few days to adjust to using them. You’ll then return to our eye doctor for an assessment of your eye health during this initial period. You may make several visits to our eye doctor after your initial fitting to confirm your contacts fit properly and don’t pose a risk to your eye health. Once we’re sure you’ve got a good fit, we’ll order your permanent contacts.
